Off the Gulf of Napoli, Capri has been an island resort since Roman times – if not earlier, with evidence of humans on Capri dated to the Neolithic and Bronze Ages.
After centuries of lavishness, the Middle Ages saw Capri suffer pirate attacks and much political and religious upheaval that continued sporadically through to the early 1800s upon its being given to Naples.
At this point, the island was discovered by the well-to-do, who haven’t left since! As a result of this history, Capri presents a unique mix of historic sites, luxury villas, delicious eateries and high-end shopping.
In Sorrento rather, there is evidence of human settlements dating back to around 600 B.C. Legend has it that Sorrento was founded by Liparus, grandson of Ulysses and Circe. Ulysses even founded a sanctuary there devoted to the cult of Sirens.
Sorrento then passed to the Romans, where it enjoyed a prosperous period in trade. Already by this time, the town was famous for its fish, wine and pottery. Today, citrus fruits and derivative products are also tradition items in Sorrento – particularly the Limoncello liqueur.
