Private Driving Tour through the picturesque villages around Lake Como
This marvelous day commences with an English-speaking private driver meeting guests at their accommodation in Milan (or other location upon request).
After traversing panoramic mountain views, the stunning Lake Como appears. Bordering the crystal waters of glacial origin is a bevy of grand palaces and lush villas of great historical importance, today owned by some of the most glamorous and powerful figures in the world. Upon request, the driver may even stop to allow guests to walk out along a pier to spy the residence of Como’s most famous local.
Time is spent in the quaint village of Como, where one may wander the picturesque streets, step into stunning piazzas and visit the Gothic-Renaissance Duomo adorned with ancient artworks. Cernobbio is the next stop, the highlight being Villa d’Este and its resplendent gardens.
Catching a ferry – car and all – from the village of Lenno to Bellagio provides time in arguably the most arresting of the Lake Como villages. Strategically positioned to be surrounded by postcard-perfect panoramas, Bellagio features lovely squares, stunning gardens in the Villa Serbelloni and Villa Melzi, the Basilica of San Giacomo and the relics of the medieval Torre delle Arti Bellagio.
The return drive to Milan is a relaxing trail through more achingly beautiful lakeside vistas, before concluding back at the guests’ accommodation.
The Lake Como area has been the playground of the rich and famous since Roman times, with Como local Pliny the Younger (61 – c. 113) constructing resorts in the area.
Little has changed in this regard, with retreats, sanctuaries, spas, gardens and villas attracting the well-to-do to this day. Peppered along the shores of the Y-shaped lake are various picturesque village towns where locals and visitors alike enjoy stunning views and a mild climate.
The area was inhabited as far back as the Bronze Age by a Celtic tribe. The Romans took over Como in 1st century BC, falling under the rule of Julius Caesar. Charlemagne invaded some 800 years later, ruling until Milan came into power in 1127.
Their reign was short lived however, with the locals taking back the lands in 1162. Over successive decades, it was ruled by the French, Spanish and Austrians before Napoleon took charge from 1796-1815. The Austrians returned to power until 1859 when it was freed to join the newly-founded Kingdom of Italy.
The area is famous for silk production, which had a great impact upon the population and economy.
