A private Rome tour exploring the must-sees of Italy’s capital, including the Coliseum and Roman Forum.

As the icon of the city, the Coliseum embodies the glorious and gory history of Roma Capitale. Learning more about it with a private tour guide, guests will almost hear the roar of the crowds cheering on the gladiators consumed in battle.

Once the heart of the ancient city, the Roman Forum presents the ancient Arch of Constantine and the ruins of many important structures that sustained Rome in times long past.

Guests will then be lead to the Capitoline and Palatine hills, where Rome is said to have been founded. The private guide will recount the incredible story of Romulus and Remus, twin sons of Mars who were abandoned and left to die in the Tiber river, only to be saved by a she-wolf and a woodpecker. Also visit the ruins of one of Rome’s most significant sites – the Imperial Palace, constructed by Emperor Domitian.

From a unique vantage point, the tour concludes gazing over Circus Maximus, the first and most extensive venue used to host public events (predominantly chariot racing), still used to host large-scale events in Rome to this day.

The history of Rome spans more than 2.5 thousand years, however archeological evidence suggests humans have lived in the area as far back as 14,000 years ago.

There were settlements of Latins and Sabines before the Etruscans arrived to what is today Italy’s largest and most populated city. Rome has seen the rise and fall of the Roman Empire and been under Papal control for many centuries, with both powers focused on building Rome into a great and powerful cultural center.

Throughout its long, sometimes violent and often prosperous history, many wondrous edifices were built – none more impressive nor iconic than the Coliseum. Beginning in 72 AD, construction of largest amphitheater ever built took just 8 years. Between 50-55,000 spectators could be accommodated, there to cheer on bloody battles between gladiators and exotic animals, mock sea battles and other spectaculars.

Nearby is the ruinous Roman Forum. Commencing as a market, it grew to become the center of Roman life for centuries. Today, what remain is testament to some of the most important centuries of Rome’s past. The forum sits between the Capitoline and Palatine Hills, two of the seven hills of Rome. Once fiercely contested lands, they now host panoramic piazzas and important must-see sites of Rome.
