Assisi is one of the most spiritual, artistic and historic towns in Italy. It is easy to appreciate the beauty of Assisi. What takes the skill and insight of our expert tour guide is bringing its past to life. Inhabited since a population of Umbrians arrived around 1000 B.C., Assisi passed through Etruscan, Roman and Lombard rule, to name a few. Each period had a lasting impact on the town, as is recounted by our expert guide throughout this Assisi exploration.

One of the most significant sites visited on this private tour is the Basilica of St. Francis, begun in 1228 in celebration of Assisi’s most famed local becoming canonized. Brimming with historical, cultural and spiritual significance, it is also home to many important artistic dedications to Italy’s Patron Saint, including by artists Cimabue and Giotto.

Another beloved saint from Assisi is St. Clare. Today, her remains, clothing and even a lock of hair are held in the Basilica di Santa Chiara, whose construction began in the mid-1200s and which certainly merits a visit with our guide.

No Italian town – nor tour thereof – would be complete without its all-important central square. In Assisi, this is the Piazza del Comune, constructed where once stood a Roman forum. Here our guide will share fascinating tidbits from the long past of this unique Umbrian town.

Comprised of winding cobbled pathways, picturesque piazzas, quaint churches and historic monuments, a visit to Assisi is like stepping back into times long past.

Birthplace of one of the most beloved saints, there are many dedications to Saint Francis of Assisi throughout the town. Despite its small size, Assisi also has also borne two other saints – St. Clare and St. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows.

Assisi boasts a total of nine churches, including the Basilica of San Francesco d’Assisi, the Basilica di Santa Chiara, and the town’s oldest church, Santa Maria Maggiore. Each hosts a collection of unique artworks, artifacts and architectural features. Dominating the city is the Rocca Maggiore perched atop Assisi, as well as remains of a Roman castle.

Assisi also hosts a plethora of artworks by important artists using their chosen medium to recount biblical stories, biographies and moral tales. Amongst the many other significant sites in Assisi, there is a Roman amphitheater from the 1st century A.D., the Temple of Minerva, as well as the central Piazza del Commune with its palaces, tower and fountains as the splendid heart of the town, all of which is surrounded by picturesque views of the Umbria countryside beyond.
